The story of the facing window
Manouch is eighty years old, nearly blind, and alone in a room full of memories. His walls hold photographs of a life that once was. His hands remember a tonbak they no longer play. Then one night, a light appears in the window across the street — and in it, a young woman who waves at him. What follows is a quiet love story told entirely through glass and distance. He dresses for her. He orders flowers for her. He dances with her — she across the street, he in his dim room, a record spinning on the gramophone. Is it better to live in beautiful unknowing — or to know the truth, and drown in sorrow?
