Nerina Gabriela Corte: “Search for the truth”
Nerina Corte was born on October 18, 1998. She studied filmmaking in Universidad Nacional de Cordoba, in Argentina. She has worked as a screenwriter on several short films. Coming Back Home is her first job as a director. Her projects are generally based on social and human rights issues.
What are the most challenging aspects of being a filmmaker?
I think the most challenging thing is telling a story that attracts the public interest. Moreover, another difficult thing to do is to find financing and endorsement from institutions that can help you make a quality film. But after all, gathering a team that understands and feels the story the same way you do, can also be challenging.
What is your source of inspiration for this short film?
I have always worked on films about human rights and I wanted to portray what happened during a very dark time in my country. The idea came during the pandemic, and then I met a woman with a similar story and it was there that I felt the need to do it, for those people who still seek justice.
What is the theme of this film?
The theme covers the last Argentine military invasion through the eyes of the daughter of a genocide. The story implies the search for the truth.
How do you decide on possible ways to promote your film when you are on a tight budget?
To work with the producer is inevitable because it helps you to reach your objectives on the set. In these cases we resort to independent festivals with no fees. We also seek to exhibit in more regional circuits which is why it’s important to have the endorsement of institutions that can later provide you with help.
How important do you think distribution is in today's marketplace?
It’s the way to publicize your project and reach the public. Now that the possibilities of making a film are many, we face a lot of competition. But also in the last years, we found new forms of distribution. The pandemic has allowed us to find other spaces that we didn’t take into account before.
For those considering self-distribution, what is your advice?
My advice is to keep a good organization with the production team and set realistic goals. Don’t stop looking for ways, because there are various, even when it’s self-distribution.
How significant do you think short films are for someone venturing into directing films?
The realization of shorts films is the first step to enter to directing. It gives you the first experience working in the industry as a director. If you want to direct films, you have to know how it works here and then start thinking of taking it to a larger scale.
What was the worst challenge of your career so far? How did you take it over?
In my career, I had to deal with the ambitions and goals of other people in the same team as mine with a different points of view, opinions, and ways of working and communicating in various fields. Most of the time it’s difficult to find a team that works together equally.
What are the factors to making a good film?
A good story consolidated which is something that can draw public attention, a good team to help you visualize your story in the best possible way and, time and patience!
Is there anything you would change if you could go back to the beginning?
I dont think so.Now I know that everything takes its time to achieve something special.
