Víctor Ybazeta: Exploring capitalism’s impact on Paita

What are the most formidable challenges inherent to the profession of filmmaking?

Obtaining the financing or funds to make the films and for the crew to be able to get a salary for the film.

Could you elaborate on the wellspring of your creative inspiration for this particular short film?

I was inspired by the fact that I have returned to live in the seaport of Paita, the main character of the film, after 18 years and the possibility of relating to the everyday life again made me feel the need to make a film.

Could you elucidate on the central thematic underpinning of your film?

The film criticizes the capitalism that has led the seaport of Paita to a cycle of looting and abandonment practically from its foundation by the Spanish invasion to the present.

How do you navigate the task of strategizing cost-effective promotional efforts when operating within a constrained budget?

The film was possible because I won an economic stimulus from the Peruvian state, thanks to this I could really organize myself with the strategies both to produce and promote it in a space that has not had a cinema since the late nineties.

In today's dynamic marketplace, how pivotal do you consider the role of film distribution?

It is very important because in my case, as it is a short film, there are no commercial distribution spaces, which makes me look for alternative spaces such as film clubs, cultural centers, cultural bars that allow the possibility of an important alternative circuit.

For individuals contemplating the path of self-distribution, what counsel or insights can you offer?

Get to know the cultural space where you operate, establish contact with the agents of these spaces and give it an important visibility in social networks.

In your estimation, what level of significance do short films hold for aspiring filmmakers seeking to embark on a career in directing?

A short film allows the possibility of building your own narrative, a visual, sound and aesthetic proposal that will shape you as a creator.

Reflecting on your professional journey thus far, could you share an instance of the most formidable challenge you encountered and how you surmounted it?

My previous films have been self-financed and made with a very small crew. In spite of this difficulty, thanks to a good production plan, it has been possible to carry them out.

What, in your view, are the critical factors that contribute to the creation of a cinematic masterpiece?

I feel that a masterpiece has to transform you as a creator, there has to be something extraordinary in everything that was done to arrive at a montage that allows you to transmit all that intense work and life that went into the filming.

If you could revisit the inception of your career, are there any aspects or decisions you would choose to alter in hindsight?

I would change absolutely nothing, because every decision I made has allowed me to get to this point.
