Tamara Broćić: Filmmaking Insights and Reflections

What are the most formidable challenges inherent to the profession of filmmaking?

You have to learn how to work with people if harmony on set is important to you. But the most essential is this search for the film language that matches the nuance of the feeling that I have in mind when I close my eyes. It will probably persist for as long as I make films, and I enjoy it in a way.

Could you elaborate on the wellspring of your creative inspiration for this particular short film?

Like a lot of my inspirations, it comes from my childhood. I have images that sometimes come to my mind either from imagination, either from memory, or a combination of both. I try to interpret them and realize why exactly I keep coming back to them. And usually from there a story emerges.

Could you elucidate on the central thematic underpinning of your film?

I wanted to sublimate feelings of separation anxiety in childhood and how it is sometimes made worse by parents not understanding how to properly communicate information and feelings to children, who then end up feeling betrayed because they can still sense things that are not being told.

How do you navigate the task of strategizing cost-effective promotional efforts when operating within a constrained budget?

You have to be wise already when writing the script or in pre-production. It is often possible to find a more simple way to tell something that you thought you needed a lot of extras or equipment for. Prepare as well as possible so that you don’t waste resources on set.

In today's dynamic marketplace, how pivotal do you consider the role of film distribution?

I am not interested in the market per se, but I am interested in being able to continue to do my work in the future, so I am aware that I should take the steps that help my films become visible if I want to be able to continue to create art.

For individuals contemplating the path of self-distribution, what counsel or insights can you offer?

I like it when films have life on their own outside of the official screenings. Showing film in a school, sending it to people you know or making projections for your family – I think those are natural ways to “distribute” your film. To me that’s as equally important as a film’s professional life.

In your estimation, what level of significance do short films hold for aspiring filmmakers seeking to embark on a career in directing?

To me, short films are films. I don’t see them as a stepping stone for “real” filmmaking. I think moving images are films. You are already directing.

Reflecting on your professional journey thus far, could you share an instance of the most formidable challenge you encountered and how you surmounted it?

Creating opportunities to work in the manner that suits my style. It took patience, learning how to choose my team, express my needs and gaining confidence. I think I’m becoming better at being grounded, prioritizing and not being afraid to not compromise when it’s not really necessary.

What, in your view, are the critical factors that contribute to the creation of a cinematic masterpiece?

Of course, there are none. You cannot predict it. Films are like kids, they always end up a little different then you planned for. But it’s fine if you don’t create a masterpiece. If you create out of the need to express your obsessions, desires or troubles, you will feel purposeful and fulfilled.

If you could revisit the inception of your career, are there any aspects or decisions you would choose to alter in hindsight?

No. I could have been more efficient in some areas but it wasn’t possible to know that before having that experience.
