Rodrigo Elizalde: Crafting childhood stories with fantasy

What are the most formidable challenges inherent to the profession of filmmaking?

I think that I could summarize the most beautiful challenge in two factors. Have a good story in your hands and make that happen.

Could you elaborate on the wellspring of your creative inspiration for this particular short film?

The fantasy. Always is the fantasy my first motivation. In the other hand, the problem of the kids is something that worries me a lot. I have four kids, so that kind of story gets me.

Could you elucidate on the central thematic underpinning of your film?

*”Vida y la torta de chocolate” (Life and chocolate cake) is about the childhood problems. About the courage the childs need to grow and learn.

How do you navigate the task of strategizing cost-effective promotional efforts when operating within a constrained budget?

The most important thing is to find the right people. We found an independent company that exclusively does short films and, honestly, it was a great choice. We are happy with the result.

In today's dynamic marketplace, how pivotal do you consider the role of film distribution?

I consider it essential, each person is specialized in a specific role, it would not be smart to ignore this.

For individuals contemplating the path of self-distribution, what counsel or insights can you offer?

As I said before it was really productive to hire an independent company that gave us a custom individual service. They look and show us festivals that thinks that can go with our profile. Is not about the quantity but more about the profile of the festival.

In your estimation, what level of significance do short films hold for aspiring filmmakers seeking to embark on a career in directing?

A lot. I always say that short films doesn’t lie. They have their own stamp and show their strengths and weaknesses. A short film shows the level of obsession, details, commitment and resolution of the director and, in the same way, bare the weaknesses.

Reflecting on your professional journey thus far, could you share an instance of the most formidable challenge you encountered and how you surmounted it?

The idea of bad blood in the filming stage disturbs me. That was something i had to work a lot. Those factors break my harmony and, mostly, my concentration. Patience and understanding what is part of the process.Sometimes those discussions are necessarie

What, in your view, are the critical factors that contribute to the creation of a cinematic masterpiece?

I think the most important thing is to film stories that inspires us. And, also, have the best possible team

If you could revisit the inception of your career, are there any aspects or decisions you would choose to alter in hindsight?

I always tell myself why I didn’t start early. My first time directing was at my 40’s, maybe if I had started early, right now I would be going through a different stage. But that’s not something that stops me, I enjoy where I am right now
